The Practical Shaman, Tools for Awakening presents Working with Sacred Plant Medicine, a journey to Mexico to work with indigenous medicine keeper Maria Teresa Valenzuela in her village of Tequisquiapan, Queretaro.
This will be an amazing cross-cultural experience and opportunity for healers and mystics from our group and from Mexico. You'll explore traditional Curanderismo, traditional ceremonial lodge, herbal remedies, plant medicine and their practical, modern-day applications for your life. In addition to Maria Teresa Valenzuela the tour will be facilitated by Renee Baribeau and Rosario Sarria.
Our journey begins at the Hotel Catedral in the historic city center of Mexico City, in what was formerly the ancient Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan. The hotel offers amazing views of the Palacio Nacional, Plaza de la Constitución and the Aztec archeological site of Templo Mayor. The plaza, known as the "Zócalo" by locals, is big enough to hold 100,000 people and is world's second largest, after Red Square in Moscow.
You will need to make your travel arrangements to be in Mexico City on Wednesday, May 16th. We will enjoy free time to explore the city that evening.
On May 16th we will have an evening talk with Sergio Magaña Ocelocoyotl, who according to Elizabeth Jenkins is an amazing light and fine healer. Sergio will give a dream talk on lucid dreaming our first night in Mexico to kick things off! Sergio is a pioneer in healing and rejuvenation techniques who was initiated in the ancient Toltec, Mexica (Aztec) tradition, and he's been weaving ancient tradition with modern energy techniques ever since.
We will begin our work together the morning of May 17th
As a group, we will go to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the national shrine on Tepeyac Hill in Mexico City. From there, we will travel by private, air-conditioned coach to Maria Teresa's village of Tequisquiapan. Located five hours from the bustling city in the southeast of Queretaro, Mexico, we will here have four whole days of teaching and experiential ceremonies.
In addition, Drum Maker Lisa Starr will be joining our group. Every participant will spend a day in ceremony making a 13" frame drum to take home with you. The drum is a transformational tool that can be used to relax and return to the body's natural rhythm while reconnecting with nature and spirit.
You will have the option of exploring various forms of plant medicine and herbal remedies. We will be working at Casa Gayatri and staying at a local hotel, called The Maridelfi, where our meals will be included.
We will visit hot springs and the fabulous artistic town of San Miguel de Allende.
Our trip will conclude back in Mexico City on May 22, late in the afternoon. You may plan your departure for May 23 or late in the evening on May 22.

Kathleen McGinley recently retired from the Allentown School District in Pennsylvania after serving as a Health and Physical Education teacher. Her ability to make a difference in her students’ lives was demonstrated by her nomination and selection as a recipient of Who’s Who Amongst American Teachers for two consecutive years from 2005-2007. Although she loved educating high school students, she decided to leave teaching after 34 years and follow her passion to utilize her expertise without the limitations created in public education. In 1992, Kathleen experienced a “miracle” during her own trials and tribulations with her divorce. The experience started her on a conscious journey of self discovery in which she created a strong spiritual connection with nature and the Universe. Her personal story has helped many others recognize how to move from a role of victim to co-creator of one’s life.
